Animal Care Attendant, Lawson - 1 position

Salary Range: $24.60 - $30.75 /hour


The successful candidate will work under the direction Lawson's Animal Care Facility Supervisor in the role of Animal Care Attendant. The Animal Care Attendant is engaged in many aspects of facility operations including husbandry, record keeping, supply monitoring, assisting and training researchers, and equipment maintenance. This role requires careful attention to regulatory requirements to ensure compliance. This role liaises with researchers, staff, and veterinarians in support of facility operations. This is a regular full time (37.5 hours per week) position.



Essential Qualifications

  • Secondary School Diploma
  • 2 years of experience in an animal care setting
  • Demonstrated excellence in animal husbandry and care for multiple research species in alignment with all policies, procedures and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Requires excellent interpersonal, organizational and planning skills to work effectively in a highly regulated environment and have the ability to deal with confidential matters
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve.
  • Demonstrates good judgment, initiative, tact and professional attitude in the workplace
  • Adaptable, flexible and resourceful.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and weekends
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated organization and time management skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, proficiency with email communication, web form completion and basic database entry
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently utilize ergonomically sound processes while performing physical activities
  • Ability to regularly stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 50 pounds
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) completed, or in progress
  • Experience contributing to and overseeing compliant animal research procedures
  • Experience caring for multiple animal species
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and guidelines
  • Familiarity with Western University and Lawson animal care policies and standard operating procedures would be an asset
  • Ability to review protocols to determine facility operational requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams, e.g. including facility staff, faculty, research staff, students and resident
Immunization Requirements
  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps rubella, varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, COVID-19 and influenza.
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing
